Ili Valley 3-Day Itinerary: Yining, Nalati, and Kuerdening Loop
The Ili Valley is Xinjiang’s green secret, a strip of meadow and river wedged between snow ranges, and it deserves more than a single stop. Over three trips I settled on a loop that starts in Yining, climbs to Nalati, and drops south into Kuerdening. Here is the day-by-day, including the mistakes I made so you don’t have to.
Day 1: Yining Arrival and the Apricot Edge
Fly or drive into Yining, pick up a car, and spend the afternoon in the city’s leafy streets and the local bazaar. If you come in early April, detour to the apricot blossom pockets east of town, which turn the hillsides white for about ten days. Overnight Yining; the hotels are the best you will get in the valley and the bazaar dinner is a highlight.

Day 2: Yining to Nalati
Drive the G218 east; the road itself is a highlight, with roadside noodle stops and sudden valley openings. Enter Nalati via the Air Grassland road for the wide meadow, ride the shuttle to the high viewpoint, and overnight in a yurt or the gate town. What people get wrong before they come
They come expecting desert to be the whole picture, then find the green is what stays with them. The oasis towns, the water running beside the road, the fields at the foot of a glacier: that is Xinjiang, and it is not in the photographs on the back of the bus seat. Distances here make a small itinerary feel enormous, and the fix is not more days but fewer stops with longer looks at each. The second thing is scale. What a day actually costs
The shape is simple: the car and the fuel, the rooms, the food. The places where it stops being cheap are the entrance tickets and the guided days. Food is the smallest of the three if you eat where locals eat and the biggest if you eat where the menu is in English. For two people driving, a day that includes a hotel runs a small fraction of the same day in Western Europe, and the gap opens further once you stop paying restaurants. The itinerary mistake that costs a day
I have done it both ways. Putting a long drive between two early starts. Wake at six, drive four hours, check in at ten, and the morning is gone along with the next one. It feels efficient and it is the single thing that most reliably ruins a trip here, because distances are not what your map suggests. Split the drive at the town in the middle, sleep, and you get the afternoon on the far side as well. Day 3: Nalati to Kuerdening
Head south through the Tekes basin toward Kuerdening, a quieter grassland threaded with spruce forest and a World Heritage site. It gets a fraction of Nalati’s crowds for equal beauty. Walk the forest boardwalk, then return to Yining by evening or push on toward the Duku Highway if your trip is longer.
Why this order
Driving Yining → Nalati → Kuerdening → Yining makes a rough loop with minimal backtracking, whereas reversing it forces you twice through the busy Tekes crossroads and wastes an hour you could spend on a meadow. The loop also means each grassland is a fresh contrast rather than a repeat.
The calendar decides everything
Spring and early summer
Harder. Buses reach Yining and Nalati town, but Kuerdening’s interior needs a private vehicle or a joined tour. A car unlocks the loop and lets you stop at the roadside viewpoints that are the best part.
Summer
June for flowers and green, early April for apricot blossom, September for gold. Avoid the national holiday week in October, when every meadow turnoff becomes a traffic jam.
Autumn
For the core loop, yes. Add a day if you want Sayram Lake or a Duku Highway crossing on the same trip, both of which sit naturally on the edges of this circuit.
Winter
Yining has the best hotels; Nalati and Kuerdening have yurts and guesthouses. Book the grasslands weeks ahead in July–August, because the yurt capacity is small and sells out.

If you have a fourth day, yes, it sits northwest of Yining and pairs naturally with the loop as a longer Ili circuit, giving you both a grassland day and an alpine-lake day.
