Kuerdening: Xinjiang’s Uncrowded Grassland and the ‘World Natural Heritage’ Forest
If Nalati is the famous face of Xinjiang’s Ili grasslands, Kuerdening (库尔德宁) is the one locals quietly prefer. Part of the same UNESCO ‘Xinjiang Tianshan’ World Natural Heritage area as the better-known meadows, Kuerdening pairs open grassland with some of the finest original spruce forest in the region — and sees a fraction of the crowds. For travelers who want the meadow without the coach buses, it is the smarter stop.
It sits in the heart of the Ili Valley, sheltered and wet, which is why the spruce here grow tall and the grass stays green deep into summer.
What Makes It Different
Most Xinjiang grasslands are pure open meadow. Kuerdening is a forest-meadow mosaic: spruce climbing the slopes, wildflower clearings between, and a river threading the valley floor. The combination gives more variety in a single walk than almost anywhere else in the north, and better odds of solitude.
The spruce forest here is a rare intact example of the kind that once covered much of the Tianshan. Walking into it — cool, dim, and scent-heavy — is a different experience from the sunny meadows and worth the detour on its own.
What to Do
Hike the valley. Trails follow the river and climb into the spruce. You don’t need a guide for the lower loops; just walk until the noise stops.
Drive the forest road. A rough track climbs to viewpoints over the valley — a 4×4 helps but a normal car manages the main grades in dry weather.
Photograph the layers. The stacked ridges of forest and meadow make for strong wide shots, especially in the clear light after morning rain.
Stay overnight. Guesthouses and yurts near the gate let you catch the soft evening and early light without a long drive in.
When and How
Best June–September, with June–July for wildflowers and September for golden forest. Spring and October are marginal; winter closes much of it.
Kuerdening is reached from Yining (roughly 2.5–3 hours) or as a side trip from the Nalati area. Roads inside are partly unpaved, so check conditions and fuel up first. It pairs well with Nalati and Kalajun for a full Ili grassland circuit — do Kuerdening when you want the quiet version.
