Kuerdening vs Nalati: Which Ili Grassland Should You Visit?

People ask me constantly: if I only have time for one Ili grassland, should it be Nalati or Kuerdening? I have camped in both. They are 80 km apart but feel like different countries. This is the honest comparison I give friends, including the parts the brochures leave out.

The Quick Verdict

Choose Nalati for the iconic, postcard-wide meadow with snow peaks and easy infrastructure. Choose Kuerdening for forest-framed meadows, fewer tour buses, and a wilder feel. If you can do both, the Yining–Nalati–Kuerdening loop is the best two-grassland experience in Xinjiang, and the contrast between them is the point.

Side-by-Side

Nalati vs Kuerdening
Factor Nalati Kuerdening
Crowds High in Jul–Aug Low to moderate
Scenery Open meadow + peaks Spruce forest + meadow
Access Paved, shuttles frequent Rougher roads, fewer buses
Facilities Hotels, yurts, cafes Basic yurts, camps
Best for First-timers, photos Nature lovers, quiet
Price Higher (famous) Lower

Scenery Differences

Nalati’s Air Grassland is a sweeping plateau where you feel tiny; the viewpoints are built and busy but the scale is unreal, and the shuttle makes it accessible to almost anyone. Kuerdening sits lower in a river valley where spruce forests climb the slopes and wildflowers carpet clearings; you hear birds, not buses, and the light filters through the trees in a way Nalati’s open plateau never gives you.

Timing your visit to {P}

My own rule now: if I have to choose between this and an extra evening in Ili, I keep the evening. The gates open early and the last entry tends to stop a couple of hours before closing, so the promise of coming back for sunset is not always possible. Most first-timers plan two hours and then get stranded. Budget the full morning. That covers the walk in, the slow look at the main feature, the side trails almost nobody does, and getting back to the car before the light goes flat.

Ninety minutes is enough to tick the box. Half a day is enough to understand it. A full day is what you want when the point of coming was Kuerdening Vs Nalati Which itself rather than a stop on the way. The first time I rushed it and spent the whole visit looking up at the same rock from one spot. The second I gave it a morning and a late-afternoon return and saw two completely different places, because the light moved across the surface and the crowds thinned to nothing.

The evening version of that plan is in our [[nalati-grassland-xinjiang-travel-guide|Nalati Grassland Practical Guide: Tickets,…]].

The mistake I made the first time

I did come back the following trip, at seven in the morning, and it was a different site. The other mistake is about distance on the map. There is a shuttle, a walk, sometimes another shuttle, and the stretch everybody underestimates is between the second gate and the thing you crossed the country to see. The gate is not the site. So: work out how far it is from where the vehicle drops you to the feature, then double it.

That is the number of hours the visit needs. It was, in the sense that I saw everything, and it was ruined in the sense that I saw everything at the same hour with the same crowd, and I spent the drive home meaning to come back and never did. I assumed two hours would be plenty. What I would tell the version of me who planned it: put the slow hours in, not the fast ones. The whole point of coming this far is to have the place to yourself for a while, and that only happens if you are willing to be there when it opens or when it is nearly shut.

Access and Logistics

Nalati has two formal gates and frequent shuttles; you can visit on a tight schedule. Kuerdening requires a private car or a small tour, the internal roads are rougher, and some sections close in wet weather. Both sit around 1,600–2,200 m, so pack a warm layer regardless of the valley heat below, because the grassland evenings drop fast.

Which pairs with what

Nalati links naturally to the Duku Highway and the north Ili road. Kuerdening links to Tekes and the south Ili loop. The Ili scenic drive connects them in one trip, so you rarely have to choose permanently; you can do both in a long weekend.

Questions from readers

Can I visit both in one day?

Not well. The drive between gates plus two shuttle systems eats a full day with no time to enjoy either. Do them as an overnight loop with a base change, and you will actually remember both.

Which is better for photography?

Nalati for grand wide shots; Kuerdening for intimate forest-and-flower compositions. Bring both if you can, because the two styles complement a travel portfolio rather than duplicate it.

Which is better with kids?

Nalati: flatter, more facilities, easier shuttles, and a known routine. Kuerdening is lovely but rougher and quieter, which small children may find boring after the first hour.

Is Kuerdening worth the rougher road?

If you dislike crowds and love forest-meadow mixes, absolutely. If you want comfort and iconic views, Nalati wins. I send birdwatchers and hikers to Kuerdening every time.

Do I need different tickets?

Yes, they are separate scenic areas with separate tickets and gates; there is no combined pass, so budget for two entries if you do the loop.
