Most visitors to the Ili Valley point their cameras at Nalati and stop there. I did the same on my first trip — then a local driver detoured me over a ridge into Kuerdening, and I have not stopped recommending it since. Kuerdening (also spelled Küerdening) is a quieter, wilder stretch of the same Tian Shan alpine forest, a UNESCO World Heritage component, and the better choice if you want meadows without the bus crowds. This guide covers what it is, when to go, how to get there, and how it compares to its famous neighbor.
What Is Kuerdening?
Kuerdening lies in Gongliu County, in the heart of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, and is part of the Xinjiang Tianshan UNESCO serial nomination. The name means “coming through the horizontal valley” in Kazakh, and the landscape lives up to it: snow-fed rivers cutting through spruce forest, rolling wildflower meadows, and a backdrop of glacial peaks. Unlike the fenced, shuttle-bus layout at Nalati, Kuerdening feels semi-wild — you drive in, and the meadow opens up in front of you. The air smells of pine and wet grass, and the only regular sound is the river and the wind in the spruce.
Why Kuerdening Beats the Crowds
The trade-off is simple. Nalati is easier and more polished; Kuerdening is freer and far less packed, especially on summer weekends when Nalati’s boardwalks are shoulder-to-shoulder. If your goal is photography, a slow hike, or just standing in a flower field without a tour group behind you, Kuerdening wins. You also get a longer golden hour, because there is no closing whistle — you simply turn back when the light fades.

How to Get There
Kuerdening has no train station, so you arrive by road. The nearest city is Yining, about two to three hours west, and most visitors come as part of a wider Ili loop rather than a day trip. Plan your drive for daylight — the last hour of the access road is unlit and easy to misjudge.
From Yining
Hire a car or join a private driver for the run east on the G218 toward Gongliu, then onto the forest-access road. The final stretch is unpaved in places, so a normal car is fine in dry summer but a higher clearance helps after rain. Fuel up in Yining; there is no reliable petrol inside the reserve.
By Car on a Loop
Kuerdening sits naturally between Yining, Nalati, and the Ili Valley scenic drive, so most people thread it into a 3–5 day loop. The detailed Kuerdening vs Nalati comparison breaks down which to prioritize if you only have one day and which order avoids backtracking.
What to Do
There is no fixed route, which is the appeal. Park where the meadow calls you, walk as far as you like, and turn back before light fails — there is no evening shuttle to catch. The valley is large enough that even on a busy Saturday you can find a quiet stretch by walking fifteen minutes from the car park. Bring water and a snack even for a short walk, because the only shelter is the spruce and the only shop is at the entrance; the meadow looks gentle but the sun at 1,600 meters is stronger than it feels, and the river water is not for drinking.
Hiking the Meadows
Easy grassland walks start right at the valley mouth. For a fuller day, follow the river upstream into the spruce belt; the light around 7–9 pm in summer is the famous “blue hour” photographers chase, when the meadow glows and the peaks go blue.
Wildlife and Flowers
Kuerdening is one of the best spots in Xinjiang to see the wild ancestor of the apple (Malus sieversii) and, with luck, marmots and raptors. Bring binoculars; the valley is wide and the animals small. In June the wildflower carpet — blue delphinium, yellow buttercup, white anemone — is dense enough to photograph without a single person in frame if you walk early.
Photography Tips for the Valley
Come for the 7–9 pm light, not midday, when the meadow flattens and the sky is blown out. A wide lens captures the meadow-to-peak scale; a telephoto compresses the spruce rows into graphic layers. Drones are restricted near the reserve boundary, so check with your driver before launching one, and never fly over grazing herds — the noise spooks the animals and angers the herders.
Rooms, guesthouses and camps
Options range from basic forest guesthouses at the entrance to yurts and ranch inns deeper in the valley. Book ahead for July and August. If you want a bed with a hot shower and a town nearby, sleep in Yining and drive in early — the Ili Valley scenic drive strings together village stays along the way, and the detailed comparison guide above explains which base suits your route. Inside the reserve, expect simple rooms and limited hot water; the trade is silence and a sky full of stars.
Altitude, Weather, and Staying Safe
The valley floor sits around 1,400–1,700 meters, so altitude is rarely a problem, but the weather swings hard: a sunny 26°C afternoon can drop to 8°C after dark, and a storm can roll in within the hour. Pack a windproof layer even in July, and wear proper shoes — the meadow looks soft but hides ankle-twisting holes from grazing livestock. There is no mobile coverage deep in the reserve, so tell your driver or guesthouse where you are walking and when you expect to return. Bears and wolves are theoretical here, but herding dogs are real; ask before approaching any flock, and never get between a dog and its sheep.
Choosing your weeks
Spring and early summer
No. The access road is closed or impassable from roughly November to April because of snow and ice. The reliable season is May through October, with June the wildflower high point.
Summer
Kuerdening is inside a nature reserve, so there is an entrance ticket and sometimes a simple registration at the gate, but no special travel permit beyond the standard Xinjiang procedures. Carry your passport.
Autumn
If you want convenience and family-friendly boardwalks, Nalati. If you want open meadow, fewer people, and photography, Kuerdening. With a car, doing both in one loop is ideal.
Winter
It is hard. There is no frequent public transport to the gate, so most visitors arrive by rental car, private driver, or a tour that includes the Ili loop.

Half a day is enough for the meadow and a short walk; a full day lets you hike upstream and catch the evening light. Pair it with Yining or Nalati for an overnight in the valley.
