Why Naraty Grassland Deserves a Spot on Your Xinjiang Itinerary

Naraty (那拉提, Nálátí) is one of the most visited alpine meadows in the Ili Valley and, for many travelers, the first real taste of Xinjiang’s endless green highlands. Unlike the more famous Kalajun grassland to the west, Naraty combines sweeping river-valley pasture with a well-developed tourism infrastructure, which makes it an easy half-day or full-day stop on the northern Xinjiang loop.

Where Is Naraty and How Do You Get There?

Naraty sits in Xinyuan County, about 250 km from Yining (the Ili prefecture capital) and roughly 70 km east of the smaller town of Gongliu. Most visitors arrive by car or tour bus as part of a self-drive route through northern Xinjiang. The drive from Yining takes around 3.5–4 hours on good roads, and the final approach winds through the Nalati town before the scenic area gate.

There is no train station at Naraty itself. The nearest airport is Yining Airport (YIN), with flights from Urumqi and a few other cities. From Yining you hire a car, join a tour, or take a long-distance bus to Xinyuan and then a local shuttle.

Opening Hours and Tickets

The scenic area is open year-round, but the core season runs from late April to early October. A standard ticket plus the internal shuttle bus costs roughly 95–140 RMB depending on the season; an optional cable car to the higher viewpoints adds another 60–100 RMB. Prices change, so confirm at the gate.

What to See Inside the Scenic Area

Naraty is split into several valleys. The Air Grassland (空中草原) is the headline attraction — a high plateau reached by shuttle and cable car where you can walk among wildflowers with the Tianshan behind you. The Valley Grassland (河谷草原) follows the Narat River and is easier to explore on foot or horseback. A smaller Forest Park section adds pine woodland for variety.

  • Air Grassland: best light is mid-morning; arrive early to beat tour groups.
  • Horseback rides: local Kazakh herders offer short rides; agree the price before mounting.
  • Photography: the open plateau gives clean horizons; a wide-angle lens pays off.

Best Time to Visit Naraty

June and July are peak green, with wildflowers across the plateau and comfortable daytime temperatures around 18–25°C. If you want fewer crowds and golden light, late September brings autumn color to the surrounding forests. Winter is quiet and very cold, but the snow meadows are striking for photographers who don’t mind the chill.

If you are timing a wider Ili trip, pair Naraty with the Huocheng lavender fields in late June, when the purple blooms are at their peak a couple of hours west.

Where to Stay

Narat town at the gate has hotels and guesthouses from basic to mid-range. For a more memorable night, book a yurt stay inside or near the pasture — expect simple bedding, shared toilets, and a real sense of Kazakh herding life. Book ahead in July and August, when domestic tourism peaks.

Practical Tips

  • Altitude is modest (around 1,800–2,200 m) but the sun is strong — bring sunscreen and a hat.
  • Mornings and evenings are cool even in summer; pack a fleece.
  • Mobile signal is decent near the gate but patchy on the plateau.
  • Carry some cash; small vendors and yurt hosts may not take mobile pay.

Naraty is not the wildest grassland in Xinjiang, but it is the most accessible and the most reliably beautiful. For travelers on a first northern-Xinjiang loop, it earns its place between the bigger names.
