Yining and the Ili Valley in Spring: The Apricot Blossom Season
Most visitors know the Ili Valley (伊犁河谷) for its summer grasslands, but the quiet headline is spring: the apricot blossom. Where to see it

What to expect
Fewer crowds than summer, cool-but-not-cold days, and a softer light than the high-sun months. It is the most “local” version of Ili — orchard villages, not tour buses.

Getting to the Ili Valley
Fly into Yining (伊宁) — it has a regional airport with connections from Urumqi and a few other cities, which is the easy way in. Driving from Urumqi is possible (~10 hours) but long; most visitors fly and rent a car or join a loop from there. The valley is the green corner of Xinjiang, so the approach itself — orchard villages, then grasslands — sets the tone before you reach the blossom.
Where to base and stay
- Yining city: the logical base — hotels, food, and the easiest access to the lower-slope orchards.
- A blossom-route guesthouse: if you want to be among the trees at first light, stay in a village on the scenic drive rather than commuting from the city.
- Book early: the apricot window is short and popular with domestic travelers; rooms tighten in peak bloom week.

- Soft light wins: the brief, cool days of April give even, flattering light — early morning before the wind, late afternoon for warmth.
- Include the snow peaks: the white-pink blossom against a still-snowy Tianshan ridge is the frame; shoot wide to keep both.
- Foreground interest: an orchard fence or a low branch leads the eye and gives scale.

Eat and combine
Spring in Ili means more than blossom — it’s also when the valley’s dairy and wild herbs peak, so try fresh yogurt and herb pancakes at a roadside stall. If you have an extra day, pair the blossom drive with Kuerdening to the south, where forest opens into grassland and the crowds thin out even further than they already are in April.
