Burqin to Kanas: The Scenic Approach to Xinjiang’s Famous Lake

Most Kanas trips start in Burqin, and the approach is its own show. The town — a tidy riverside place with Russian-style cottages and a famous night market — sits at the gateway to the Altai, and the 130 km road up to the Kanas scenic area climbs from desert-edge town through forest to glacial lake. Along the way, the Wucaitan (Colorful Beach) and the Irtysh River give you two easy stops that preview the north’s range.

This is the standard northern-Xinjiang launch, best done as a half-day with pauses.

Burqin Itself

Worth a night. The town’s wooden architecture and the riverside night market (cold beer, grilled fish from the river, smoked things) are a gentle intro to the Altai. It’s also where you fuel up and grab last supplies — once in the scenic area, prices rise and choice thins.

Wucaitan (Colorful Beach)

On the way, just north of town on the Irtysh, the ‘Colorful Beach’ is a band of eroded multicolored cliffs across from green riverine forest — best at sunset when the strata glow. It’s a short stop, photogenic, and a good leg-stretch. (Note: it’s distinct from the ‘Rainbow Beach’ branding elsewhere; this is the Burqin one.)

The Climb to Kanas

From Burqin the road follows the river valley and climbs into spruce forest. In autumn the birch along the way turn gold and the drive is gorgeous; in summer it’s green and lush. The final stretch enters the geopark; private cars stop at the gate and the shuttle takes you in. Allow 2.5–3 hours Burqin to lake with stops, more in autumn traffic.

Timing

Late September–early October is peak (book the Burqin hotels early — they fill). Summer is easy and green. Winter access is limited. Fly into Burqin’s airport in season to skip the long Urumqi drive, or approach overland as part of a northern loop. Either way, treat the approach as part of the trip, not just the transfer — the Burqin–Kanas road is northern Xinjiang in miniature.
