Duku Highway by Season: Opening Dates and the Best Month to Drive

The single most important fact about the Duku Highway (独库公路) is not its 561 km or its mountain views — it is that the road is closed for roughly half the year. The opening window

Duku typically opens in early June and closes in early October, with the exact dates set each spring by the transport authority after the snow clears. In 2026 the road opened on 1 June. Treat those dates as a guide, not a guarantee — late snow can delay the north-end opening by weeks.

Daily, the road is usually open to traffic only during daylight, roughly 08:00–19:00, and is closed entirely outside the season. Always confirm the current year’s dates before you book transport; the official opening notice carries the yearly announcement.

Month by month

June — the relief opening

Wildflowers along the northern grasslands, snow still on the high passes, and fewer crowds than mid-summer. Risk: a late cold snap can briefly reclose the summit. Good if you can be flexible.

July–August — peak

Lush, green, and busiest. Afternoon thunderstorms build over the Tianshan, so drive the exposed passes in the morning. This is when the road sees the most traffic and the tightest photo-stop parking.

September — the sweet spot

My pick. The grass turns gold, the air is clear, the storms ease, and the crowds thin after the school holidays. Light is at its honest best for photography along the route.

October — first snow

Stunning if you catch a clear week, but the first heavy snow usually forces an early closure. Plan October as a gamble, not a certainty.

November–May — closed

Heavy snow makes the high sections impassable. The road is shut the entire winter.

Why the season drives everything

• Your itinerary: you cannot loop north–south Xinjiang on Duku outside June–September. In winter you must route around via the longer desert highways.
• Your packing: even in July, the Hashilegen pass sits near 3,400 m and can be near freezing at dawn. Layers are non-negotiable.
