Cross-Region Road Trip: Urumqi to Kashgar the Long Way
The drive from Urumqi to Kashgar is the spine of any grand Xinjiang itinerary — about 1,500 km that crosses the whole region from north basin to southern oasis, via desert highway or mountain pass. Done in one heroic push it’s two long days; done well it’s a week of distinct landscapes. This is the traverse that ties the region together, and self-driving it is the closest thing to a Silk Road road trip.
Two main routes, with a third if you want the mountains.

Route A: The Desert Crossing (G30 + G3012)
Urumqi south through Turpan, then west along the northern Tarim rim via Korla and Aksu to Kashgar. Fast, paved, and straight — the pragmatic choice. Highlights: Turpan’s ruins, the Korla oasis, and the long Tarim drive. Boring in stretches but efficient; do it if time is short.

Route B: The Mountain Loop (via the Duku)
In summer when the Duku is open, go Urumqi–Dushanzi–over the Tianshan–Kuqa–then west to Kashgar. This adds the most spectacular pass in the region and swaps desert for alpine. Longer and seasonal, but the better drive. Combine with a Sayram–Ili detour for a true northern loop before heading south.

Splitting the Days
A sensible 4-day version: Day 1 Urumqi–Turpan (see the ruins); Day 2 Turpan–Korla/Aksu (desert drive); Day 3 Aksu–Kashgar (arrive, Old Town evening); Day 4 rest and explore Kashgar. Add days for the Duku or the Pamir extension. Fuel is easy in every city; top up before any desert or mountain gap.
Why Drive It
The train does Urumqi–Kashgar overnight, and flying is faster — but neither shows you the basin’s scale or the oasis towns’ rhythm. Self-driving the traverse is the region in miniature: you feel the distance, meet the towns, and arrive in Kashgar having earned it. It’s the quintessential Xinjiang drive, and the one to build a trip around.
