How Many Days Do You Need in Xinjiang? Realistic Itinerary Planning

The single most common planning mistake in Xinjiang is underestimating its size. The region spans about 1,600 km east to west. Urumqi to Kashgar is a 1,500 km journey; to Kanas in the far north, another long haul. You cannot ‘see Xinjiang’ in a long weekend — and trying to will leave you on buses more than on the ground.

So how many days? A reasonable minimum is 10–12 days to experience one coherent region well. Two to three weeks lets you combine two regions (for example, the north grasslands with Urumqi, or the southern Silk Road with Kashgar and the Pamirs). A month barely covers the highlights at a relaxed pace.

Here is a regional time budget:

Urumqi + Tianchi + Turpan loop: 4–5 days. The easiest intro, with desert, lake, and history.
Northern Xinjiang (Urumqi–Kanas–Hemu–Ili grasslands): 9–12 days. The scenery crown jewel, best in summer and autumn.
Southern Silk Road (Urumqi–Kashgar–Tashkurgan–Yarkand–Hotan): 10–14 days. Culture, bazaars, and the Pamirs.
Full circle (north + south): 18–25 days with internal flights.

Packing essentials laid out for remote travel

Three sample itineraries:

Option A — Northern Highlights (12 days): Urumqi (2) → Tianchi (1) → Burqin (1) → Kanas & Hemu (3) → Urumqi → Ili/Nalati/Sayram (3) → fly out. Best June–September.
Option B — Southern Silk Road (12 days): Urumqi (1) → Turpan (2) → flight to Kashgar (3) → Tashkurgan/Pamirs (2) → Yarkand & Hotan (2) → fly out. Best spring or autumn.
Option C — Best of Both (21 days): combine A and B with a domestic flight between the north and south.

Private transport ready for a long road trip

Build in rest. Long drives between sites (4–8 hours is normal) are tiring; schedule a light day after big transfer days. Internal flights save enormous time and are reasonably priced — use them to leap between Urumqi, Kashgar, and Yining rather than grinding the highways. A solid Xinjiang Travel Guide itinerary always protects buffer days for weather and permits (the Pamirs and border zones need advance paperwork).

Bottom line: don’t try to do everything. Pick one region, go deep, and leave the rest for a return trip. Xinjiang rewards focus far more than checklist tourism.
