Tashkurgan: Stone City, Golden Grass Beach & Tajik Heritage
At 3,090 meters on the wind-scoured edge of the Pamir Plateau, Tashkurgan — the name means “Stone Tower” or “Stone Fortress” in Persian/Uyghur — is the last settled outpost before the Pakistan border.

Why Visit Tashkurgan
Most visitors treat Tashkurgan as a sleep-stop between Karakul Lake and Kashgar. That’s a mistake. The town itself rewards slowness — morning light on the stone fort, the sound of Tajik flutes drifting from a courtyard, the eerie gold of the grasslands at dusk.
Best Season
- May–mid-October: fully accessible
- June–August: warmest, lupine blooming on the grasslands
- September: crystal-clear air, fewer tour buses

Tickets & Opening
- Stone City + Golden Grass Beach combo ticket: approx. ¥90 / person
- Opening hours: typically 08:30–20:00 (summer)
- Permit: Same border zone PSB permit as for Karakul — arrange in Kashgar.
What to Do
1. Stone City (石头城) — What remains is a Sui-Tang era fortification on a massive earthen platform.
2. Golden Grass Beach (金草滩) — A fertile strip of wetlands fed by snowmelt, crisscrossed with wooden boardwalks.
3. Tajik Cultural Immersion — Tashkurgan is predominantly Tajik, an Iranic-speaking, Ismaili Muslim mountain people.

Where to Stay & Eat
Tashkurgan has no luxury resorts — accommodation is functional: Budget–Mid: Qogir / Kaitu-style hotels and guesthouses in town (¥150–400/night).
Getting There
Same route as Karakul — G314 from Kashgar, ~290 km, 5.5–6 hours with stops.
Altitude & Safety
Tashkurgan sits at 3,090 m. Acclimatize in Kashgar first. Bring warm layers — nights dip below freezing even in summer.
