Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) Hiking Trails and Cable Car: A Walker’s Guide
Most visitors ride the shuttle to Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), snap the standard jetty photo, and leave. That is a waste. The lake has a genuinely good walking network, and the cable car to the Bogda viewpoint is the single best 20 minutes you can spend near Urumqi. Here is how I walk it, based on more than a dozen visits that started as lazy photo stops and became proper hikes.
The Lakeside Boardwalk
A mostly flat 3 km path runs the eastern shore from the main jetty toward the Queen Mother Temple. It is the calmest place on the lake, favoured by locals doing morning exercise. Go early; by late morning the tour groups fill it, and the calm that makes it special evaporates. I treat this walk as the core of every visit and never skip it.
The Cable Car to Bogda Viewpoint

The cable car deposits you near a high ridge with a railing view straight down the lake to the Bogda snow peak. On a clear day it is spectacular; in cloud it is pointless, so check the sky before paying, because refunds are not a thing and the mist can roll in within minutes.
Maya Mountain and the West Road
The western shore road (reached by a separate shuttle) is less crowded and winds through spruce with occasional lake glimpses. A fit walker can do a section on foot, but distances are long; most ride the shuttle and hop off at viewpoints. The road is where I go when the main jetty is mobbed and I still want lake views without the crowd.
A second look on day two
If your itinerary has a spare morning, spend it here again rather than at the bigger name on the far side of town. I did, and the second visit was better, because the first had been spent working out where to stand. The second time you can skip the obligatory viewpoint and walk along the base of the ridge where the light comes in sideways, and that is the photograph you keep. The place only makes sense once you know its shape. A Half-Day Walker’s Plan
First shuttle in, walk the boardwalk east (60 min), ride the cable car if clear (90 min round trip with photos), picnic at the lakeside, then the Maya shuttle for one viewpoint before descending. What to bring
Trail shoes (the boardwalk is fine in sneakers), water, and a wind layer; the ridge is cooler and breezier than the shore. The lake is at ~1,900 m, so pace yourself on the climb, and don’t let the easy boardwalk fool you into sprinting the cable-car steps.

Is the boardwalk suitable for kids?
Yes, it is flat and wide. The cable car is also fine for families; just hold small children on the open ridge, where the wind can be strong and the drop is real.
Should I buy the cable car in advance?
Not usually; buy on site and only if the sky is clear. Pre-buying traps you into a cloudy-day ride and the view is the entire point of the expense.
How hard is the Maya Mountain walk?
Moderate if you walk segments; the shuttle does the climbing. The boardwalk is easy. None of it is technical, and there are benches along the main path for the altitude-breathless.
Can I swim in Tianchi?
No, the lake is a protected scenic and water source; swimming is prohibited. Wading is also discouraged, and the shallows are often roped off near the jetty.
How early should I arrive?
For the empty boardwalk, be on the first shuttle at opening (around 09:00). By 11:00 the coaches dominate the jetty and the calm is gone for the day.
