Xinjiang Fruits: The Complete Guide to the Region’s World-Famous Melons, Grapes, and Stone Fruits

If there is one mountain range that defines Xinjiang, it is the Tianshan Mountains (天山, “Mountains of Heaven”). They run 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) east-to-west across the entire region, splitting Xinjiang into north and south, and creating some of the most dramatic landscapes on the continent.

This is your complete Tianshan travel guide: what the Tianshan are, why they matter, the best places to visit (Heavenly Lake, the grasslands, the passes), hiking routes, and how to get there from Urumqi and beyond.

What Are the Tianshan Mountains?

The Tianshan Range (天山山脉) is one of the largest mountain systems in the world, stretching from Uzbekistan in the west to Xinjiang’s eastern deserts in the east. In Xinjiang, the Tianshan divide the region into:

  • Northern Xinjiang (北疆): Grasslands, spruce forests, cooler summers, and the capital Urumqi.
  • Southern Xinjiang (南疆): The Tarim Basin, the Taklamakan Desert, and the oasis cities of Kashgar and Hotan — hotter, drier, and more intensly Central Asian.

The Tianshan are a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2013). The designation covers four separate areas across Xinjiang and Kyrgyzstan, recognizing both the natural beauty and the cultural importance of these mountains as a crossroads of the Silk Road.

Heavenly Lake (Tianchi, 天池): The Crown Jewel

If you only visit one place in the Tianshan, make it Heavenly Lake (天池, Tianchi). At 1,980 meters (6,496 feet) above sea level, this alpine lake is a mirror of the surrounding snow peaks, surrounded by spruce forests and seasonal wildflowers.

What To See at Heavenly Lake

  • The Lake Itself: Emerald-blue water, mirror-like on calm mornings. A 2–3 hour walk around the shore is the best way to experience it.
  • Bogeda Peak View (博格达峰): The highest peak in the eastern Tianshan (5,445 m / 17,857 ft) is visible from the lake’s northern shore on clear days.
  • Spruce Forests: Ancient, towering spruce trees line the lake’s western and northern shores. In autumn, they turn a deep, glowing gold.
  • Botanical Gardens: The area around the lake has more than 100 species of wildflowers and medicinal herbs.

Best Season for Heavenly Lake

Season What You’ll See Crowds
June–August Wildflowers, green forests, pleasant temperatures (15–25°C) Heavy
September PEAK: Golden spruce forests, crisp air, fewer tourists Moderate
October–May Snow-covered, icy, ethereal — but very cold Very light

Nalati Grassland (那拉提草原): The Most Famous Pasture

Nalati (那拉提) is the most famous stretch of Tianshan pastureland. Located in Yili (Ghulja) Prefecture, it is a sweeping alpine meadow at 1,800–2,500 meters, with carpet-like grass, wildflowers, and Kazakh yurts dotting the landscape.

What To Do at Nalati

  • Stay in a yurt (yurt stay): 150–400 RMB/night. You wil eat milk tea, lamb, and homemade yogurt with a Kazakh family.
  • Horseback riding: 80–150 RMB/hour. The horses are small but incredibly sure-footed on the mountain trails.
  • Hiking: Several marked trails of 3–8 km. The “Sky Prairie” (空中草原) trail is the most scenic.

Best Season

June to September — when the grass is green and the flowers are in bloom. In May and October, it can be too cold for comfortable yurt stays.

Other Key Tianshan Destinations

1. Bayanbulak Grassland (巴音布鲁克)

Famous for its “Nine-Twist River” (九曲十八弯) — the Kaidu River winds through a vast alpine wetland, creating nine visible bends from a single sunset viewpoint. It is one of the best sunset spots in all of Xinjiang.

Getting there: A 6-hour drive from Korla or a 4-hour drive from Nalati. Entrance fee: 140–190 RMB (seasonal).

2. Tianshan Grand Canyon (天山神秘大峡谷)

Located near Kuqa (库车) in southern Xinjiang, this is a red-rock canyon carved by wind and water over milenia. The narrow passages and towering walls are spectacular, and it is much less visited than Heavenly Lake.

Entrance fee: 41 RMB. Best from April to October.

3. Tomur Peak Nature Reserve (托木尔峰)

The highest peak in the Tianshan (7,439 m / 24,406 ft) sits on the border with Kyrgyzstan. The surrounding nature reserve has glaciers, alpine lakes, and multi-day trekking routes. Access is restricted and requires permits — this is for serious mountaineers only.

Hiking in the Tianshan: Routes for Every Level

Beginer: Heavenly Lake Shore Walk

A 7 km (4.5 mile) loop around the lake shore. Flat to gently rolling. Takes 2–3 hours. Best at sunrise (the light on the water is incredible).

Intermediate: Nalati Sky Prairie Trail

A 6–8 km (4–5 mile) one-way trail that climbs from the valley floor to a high alpine meadow with 360-degree Tianshan views. Takes 3–5 hours. Best in July–August when the flowers are blooming.

Advanced: Tomur Peak Base Camp Trek

A multi-day trek (3–5 days) that requires permits, a guide, and proper mountain gear. Only for experienced trekkers. Best attempted in July–August (the only snow-free window).

How to Get to the Tianshan Mountains

To Heavenly Lake (from Urumqi)

  • Day tour bus: 150–250 RMB round trip. Departs Urumqi at 8 AM, returns at 6 PM. Book through any hotel or tour agency.
  • Chartered car: 500–800 RMB round trip. Gives you flexibility to stop at viewpoints.
  • Public bus: Urumqi South Station → Fukang (阜康) → Heavenly Lake shuttle. Total: 50–70 RMB, 2.5 hours.

To Nalati Grassland (from Yili/Ghulja)

  • Chartered car: 400–600 RMB one-way (3 hours). Most convenient.
  • Public bus: Yili/Ghulja bus station → Nalati Town. 50–70 RMB, 3 hours. Then a shuttle bus to the scenic area (20 RMB).

Practical Tips for Tianshan Travel

Altitude sickness is real. Heavenly Lake is at nearly 2,000 m (6,500 ft). If you are coming from sea level, take it easy on your first day. Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness.

Weather changes fast. Even in summer, bring a fleece jacket and a rain shell. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July–August.

Accommodation fills up. Traveling in peak season (July–August, September), book yurts and hotels at least 1–2 weeks ahead. For National Day (October 1–7), book 1–2 months ahead.

Food options are limited. Inside scenic areas, your choices are yurt-hosted meals (lamb, naan, milk tea) or overpriced Chinese tourist food. Bring snaks and fruit from the city.

Why the Tianshan Mountains Are Xinjiang’s Beating Heart

The Tianshan are not just a scenic backdrop. They are the reason Xinjiang exists as it does — the glaciers feed the rivers that make life possible in the desert cities; the grasslands feed the livestock that sustain the nomads; the passes through the mountains were the highways of the Silk Road.

When you stand at Heavenly Lake at sunrise, or drink milk tea in a Nalati yurt with the sound of a horsebell in the distance, or watch the sun set over the Nine-Twist River — you are experiencing the Tianshan not as a “destination,” but as a living, breathing landscape that has shaped every culture that has passed through it for thousands of years.

Plan your Xinjiang trip to spend at least 3–4 days in the Tianshan. It will be the most memorable part of your journey — and you wil leave already planning your return.
