Nalati Grassland: Best Time to Visit and How to Get There
The first time the Nalati Grassland opened up in front of our car, the road crested a hill and the whole valley floor was a rolling green quilt stitched with rivers and herds of white sheep. Nalati is the most famous alpine meadow in the Ili Valley, and fame has a cost: crowds and confusion about which gate to use. Here is how to arrive at the right moment and the right entrance, after two trips that taught me both mistakes.
Where Nalati Is (and the Gate Problem)
Nalati sits in Xinyuan County, about 250 km from Yining. The park has two main access routes: the Air Grassland (Kongcao) road and the River Valley (Hegu) road, entered from different points. Many visitors waste an hour backtracking because they assumed one ticket covered both from one gate. Know your target view before you buy, because the two roads show you different mountains and different meadows.

Getting There
Fly or drive to Yining, then a 3-hour scenic drive east on the G218. A private car is the norm; the Ili Valley scenic drive strings Nalati with Kuerdening in one loop and is the most efficient way to see both grasslands. Inside the park, the shuttle is mandatory on the upper meadows; private cars only reach the valley fringe, so don’t expect to drive to the famous viewpoints.
Stay options
Outside the gate, Xinyuan town has standard hotels. Inside, yurt camps and the Nalati Town lodges let you catch sunrise on the meadow, which is the whole point. Book yurts weeks ahead in July–August, because the good ones are few and the tour groups take them first.
Pitfalls First-Timers Hit
Assuming the weather is mild: at 1,800–2,200 m it drops near freezing at night even in July; bring a layer or regret it. Assuming you can drive the upper loop: you cannot, the shuttle is enforced and the rangers are firm. And assuming a half day is enough: the drive in alone eats half a day, so plan a full day or an overnight, or you will spend more time in transit than on the grass.
What to do on the meadow
Walk the boardwalks (they protect the fragile turf and keep you from sinking into a bog after rain), ride a horse with a local herder, and watch the light move across the valley. The horse rides are informal and cheap; agree the price and duration before you mount, because “a short ride” means different things to different people.
