Heavenly Lake (天池 / Tianchi) is the easy alpine day-trip from Urumqi — a glacial lake at about 1,900 m beneath the Bogda peaks. This is the “how to actually do the visit” version; the main Tianchi guide covers the scenery.
Getting there from Urumqi
- Distance/time: roughly 1.5–2 hours by car from the city; the last stretch is a winding mountain road.
- Options: join a tour, hire a car, or take the public shuttle from Urumqi. Driving yourself is fine on the paved road.
Inside the scenic area
You park at the lower station, ride the shuttle up to the lake shore, then choose:
- Cable car: lifts you to a higher viewpoint for the classic “lake + snow peak” panorama. Best for the iconic shot and for avoiding the lakeside crowds.
- Boat: a slow loop on the water — calm, pretty, good if you want the lake level experience rather than the height.
- Shore walk: flat paths along the water; easy and family-friendly.
Cable car and boat are separate paid extras on top of the entry; pick one or both by time and budget.

- At the lake: 2–3 hours covers the shore, a cable-car viewpoint, and a meal.
- Full trip from Urumqi: a solid half-day to full day with driving.
