Guozigou Bridge and Sayram Lake Viewpoint: The Ili Ring-Road Showstopper
Driving west from Yining toward Sayram Lake, the highway suddenly leaps a deep gorge on the red arches of Guozigou Bridge. It is one of the most photographed structures in Xinjiang, and the viewpoint is easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. Where to See the Bridge
The best pull-off is on the eastbound side (heading from Sayram back toward Yining) at the designated viewing area just before the bridge. From there you see the full arch span the gorge with snow peaks behind. Going the other direction, there is a service area a few km past with a side angle that is good but less dramatic, so if the bridge is your priority, time the eastbound leg for the light.

The gorge below has a short trail along a stream through spruce; it is a good leg-stretch after the highway. In late spring the hillsides are dotted with wildflowers, and the air smells of resin in a way that makes the drive worthwhile on its own.
Timing on the Ring Road
Morning light hits the bridge’s east face; afternoon the gorge is in shadow but the lake beyond glows. If you are doing the Sayram Lake loop, stop at the viewpoint on the Yining→Sayram leg in the morning and again on the return if you want both lights, because the bridge reads completely differently front-lit versus back-lit.
Linking It All
Guozigou is the dramatic gateway to Sayram; pair the two in one half-day, then continue the ring road down to Yining or north toward the Duku connection. The combined drive is the spine of the northern Ili circuit and rivals any single attraction, which is why I always tell people to budget the stop rather than blast through.
