North Xinjiang 5-Day Itinerary: Kanas, Sayram, and Tianchi Loop
Five days is not enough for all of Xinjiang, but it is enough for a stunning north loop if you are disciplined. I have driven this exact shape twice: fly into Urumqi, swing north to Tianchi, fly or drive to the Kanas region, then loop the Ili side to Sayram. Here is the order that avoids backtracking and the mistakes I made the first time.

Day 1: Urumqi + Tianchi
Arrive Urumqi, do the Tianchi day trip (or rest if jet-lagged). Evening in the city for noodles. The Tianchi guide has the timing that gets you the calm morning water before the coaches, which is the only way to see the lake properly on a short trip.
Days 2–3: Kanas and Hemu
Fly Urumqi → Burqin or take the overnight train/bus, then enter Kanas. Spend Day 2 on the lake, Day 3 at Hemu for sunrise. This compresses the Altai triangle by skipping Baihaba, which is the right call when time is tight; you still get the two signature sights.
Days 4–5: Across to Ili and Sayram
This is the hard leg: from the Altai you must get to Yining (flight from Burqin/Altay is fastest; driving is two long days). Day 4 is transit; Day 5 is Sayram Lake at sunrise, then fly out from Yining. The 7-day north itinerary adds the Duku Highway if you have two more days, and I recommend stretching to it if your calendar allows.
Why this order
Urumqi east, Altai north, Ili west, then fly home from Yining avoids returning to Urumqi and saves a full day. It is the most efficient 5-day shape for these three icons, and the alternative (returning east) wastes a day of pure driving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days too rushed?
For these three icons, it is tight but doable, especially if you fly the long Altai–Ili leg. Add days for grasslands or the Duku Highway, because each deserves more than a drive-by.
Should I rent a car?
For Tianchi and Sayram, a car helps; for the Altai interior, the park shuttle is mandatory anyway. Mix trains/flights and local cars to save time, and don’t try to self-drive the whole loop in five days.
Can I add the Duku Highway?
Not comfortably in 5 days unless you drop Sayram. The 7-day plan is the minimum for Urumqi–Kanas–Duku–Ili, and even that moves quickly through the grasslands.
What if I only have one Xinjiang trip?
This loop shows the best lakes; pair with a future southern Xinjiang (Kashgar–Pamir) trip for the full picture, because north and south are genuinely different trips.
Best season for this loop?
June–September. September is ideal for Kanas colour and still-good Ili meadows, though Sayram gets chilly at night and you will want a real jacket for the lakeside dawn.
