Northern Xinjiang Road Trip: The Ultimate Self-Drive Route Through Lakes and Grasslands
The north of Xinjiang is the region’s scenic crown — alpine lakes, golden forests, and endless grassland, all connected by some of the most beautiful driving in Asia. A self-drive loop through Urumqi, Kanas, Hemu, the Ili Valley, and Sayram Lake is the classic northern itinerary, and doing it by car means you control the light, the stops, and the pace. This is the route map.
The Loop (12–14 Days)
Urumqi (1–2 days). Stock up, see Heavenly Lake as a day trip, sort any permits.
North to Burqin (1 day drive). Overnight Burqin; catch the 五彩滩 (Colorful Beach) at sunset on the way.
Kanas & Hemu (2–3 days). The geopark needs two nights to see the lake and the village in good light.
Back to Urumqi, then south on the Duku Highway (1–2 days). The Duku crosses the Tianshan in a day of scenery — snow peaks to canyon. Open June–October.
Yili Valley (2–3 days). Nalati, Kuerdening, and the 果子沟 gorge; base in Yining.
Sayram Lake (half day). Ring-road it, then continue or fly out from Yining.
Timing and Season
The loop works best June–September (green) or late September–early October (gold). The Duku and the Altai passes close in deep winter. Summer is peak and busy; September is the photographer’s choice. Build buffer days — mountain weather and full hotels in October will test a tight schedule.
Practical Notes
Fuel. Fill in every city; remote stretches (Burqin–Kanas, the Duku) have sparse stations. Don’t run low.
Lodging. Book Kanas/Hemu and Yining ahead in autumn; the popular stops sell out.
Permits. Northern Xinjiang needs none except for Baihaba (a separate border permit). The Pamir permit is a different trip.
Car. A normal car drives the whole loop; a 4×4 only helps on side tracks. Hire a driver if you’d rather not navigate.
Drive light. Long transfer days (4–8 hours) are normal; schedule a rest day after big drives.
