Heavenly Lake (Tianchi): The Alpine Mirror of the Tianshan Mountains
Heavenly Lake — Tianchi in Chinese — sits at about 1,900 meters in the Bolokuobu Mountains, an eastern spur of the Tianshan, roughly 110 km from Urumqi. A sacred site in local Kazakh and Mongolian legend (the ‘Yaochi’ or Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West), it is the single easiest taste of high-mountain Xinjiang for travelers who are short on time.
The lake itself is long and narrow, fed by meltwater and backed by the dramatic pyramid of Bogda Peak (5,445 m). In calm weather the surface turns to glass, doubling the ridgeline. A ring of Siberian spruce and seasonal wildflower meadows softens the shore, and in autumn the whole basin turns gold and russet.
A typical visit begins with the shuttle bus from the entrance up to the shore, then options multiply: a boat cruise across to the far promontory, a cable car toward the higher ‘West Small Heavenly Lake,’ or gentle lakeside walks. For a more active day, the trails above the water climb into spruce forest with widening views back down the valley toward the desert plain.
Getting there: most visitors come on a guided day trip from Urumqi, but public buses and private drivers make it doable independently. The drive is straightforward and the infrastructure is the most developed of any mountain attraction in the region — which is a blessing for first-timers and a drawback if you are seeking solitude. Go on a weekday and arrive at opening to beat the coach tours.
Pair it with context. Tianchi works beautifully as a half-day nature break before or after the cultural intensity of Urumqi and the southern Silk Road. If you are following a Xinjiang Travel Guide route that heads north toward Turpan or the northbound grasslands, it is a logical first or last stop.
What to bring: even in summer the wind off the water is cool, so a windbreaker is wise; mornings can be near-freezing in shoulder season. Comfortable shoes are enough for the shore paths, but proper hiking gear opens the upper trails. Altitude is modest but real — pace yourself if you feel lightheaded.
Photography tips: the classic reflection shot needs windless early morning; the cable-car ride gives a bird’s-eye framing of the lake and Bogda Peak; and the spruce-framed shoreline paths are lovely in backlight late afternoon. Drone rules are strict near the border regions of Xinjiang, so check locally before flying.
Heavenly Lake will not replace the raw wilderness of Kanas or the Pamirs, but for accessibility, beauty, and a first handshake with the Tianshan, few places deliver as reliably — and as close to a major city — as Tianchi.
