Crossing the Taklamakan (塔克拉玛干) — the “Sea of Death,” one of the largest shifting-sand deserts on Earth — is a genuine bucket-list drive, but it demands planning. This is the practical “which road, how long, what to carry” version; for the sensory account, see what the crossing is really like.

Which highway?

  • The classic Tarim Desert Highway (Lunnan–Minfeng): the original crossing, roughly 500 km of straight road through the dunes, lined with a poplar windbreak and phone-line corridor. The iconic one.

Fuel and supplies

  • Fill up at both ends and at any town you pass; the central crossing has sparse, far-apart stations.
  • Carry water — several days’ worth per person, plus extra for the car.
  • A spare tyre and basic tools: the road is good but remote; a flat is a serious delay.

How long?

A non-stop crossing of the classic highway is ~5–6 hours of driving; plan a full day with stops and buffer. The oasis-town routes are multi-day.

Permits and season

  • No special permit is needed to drive the desert highway itself, but it is remote — tell someone your plan and check road status.
  • Best season: spring and autumn. Summer is brutally hot; winter is freezing and the road can ice over.
