Heavenly Lake (Tianchi): The Alpine Mirror of the Tianshan Mountains
Heavenly Lake — Tianchi in Chinese — sits at about 1,900 meters in the Bolokuobu Mountains, an eastern spur of the Tianshan, roughly 110 km from Urumqi. A sacred site in local Kazakh and Mongolian legend (the ‘Yaochi’ or Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West), it is the single easiest taste of high-mountain Xinjiang for travelers who are short on time.
The lake itself is long and narrow, fed by meltwater and backed by the dramatic pyramid of Bogda Peak (5,445 m). In calm weather the surface turns to glass, doubling the ridgeline. A ring of Siberian spruce and seasonal wildflower meadows softens the shore, and in autumn the whole basin turns gold and russet.
A typical visit begins with the shuttle bus from the entrance up to the shore, then options multiply: a boat cruise across to the far promontory, a cable car toward the higher ‘West Small Heavenly Lake,’ or gentle lakeside walks. For a more active day, the trails above the water climb into spruce forest with widening views back down the valley toward the desert plain.
Getting there: most visitors come on a guided day trip from Urumqi, but public buses and private drivers make it doable independently. The drive is straightforward and the infrastructure is the most developed of any mountain attraction in the region — which is a blessing for first-timers and a drawback if you are seeking solitude. Go on a weekday and arrive at opening to beat the coach tours.

Pair it with context. Tianchi works beautifully as a half-day nature break before or after the cultural intensity of Urumqi and the southern Silk Road. If you are following a Xinjiang Travel Guide route that heads north toward Turpan or the northbound grasslands, it is a logical first or last stop.
What to bring: even in summer the wind off the water is cool, so a windbreaker is wise; mornings can be near-freezing in shoulder season. Comfortable shoes are enough for the shore paths, but proper hiking gear opens the upper trails. Altitude is modest but real — pace yourself if you feel lightheaded.

Photography tips: the classic reflection shot needs windless early morning; the cable-car ride gives a bird’s-eye framing of the lake and Bogda Peak; and the spruce-framed shoreline paths are lovely in backlight late afternoon. Drone rules are strict near the border regions of Xinjiang, so check locally before flying.
Heavenly Lake will not replace the raw wilderness of Kanas or the Pamirs, but for accessibility, beauty, and a first handshake with the Tianshan, few places deliver as reliably — and as close to a major city — as Tianchi.
A few minutes of background change the visit
Read that the morning before rather than at the entrance, where the boards stand too far from the object to help. Knowing what you are standing on turns a pleasant walk into something you actually remember. The history here is layered in a way the official signage compresses into names and dates. Locals in Tianshan will give you the short version in about a minute if you ask, and it is usually better than the panel at the gate. The place only makes sense once you know its shape. Heavenly Lake Tianchi The was cut rather than built, which is why the walls are solid and the streets are the empty space between them, and why centuries of dust ended up acting as a roof. The money, line by line
Staff there are used to it, and the answer takes ten seconds. The headline entrance ticket is only the first line. On top of it comes a shuttle or sightseeing bus inside the site, and if you want a far viewpoint rather than the main one that is another leg. Parking, a printed map, and a guide are the other three places the number moves. Two of us covered the whole thing for well under what a single hotel night in Tianshan costs, but only because we shared the car and shared the entry between us.
On your own the same afternoon comes out at maybe half again as much. The admission is cheap, the internal transport is what adds up, and a family of four in one car turns a small ticket into a real line in the budget. Prices at the gate are reasonable by European standards, which is exactly why they are easy to underestimate. Ask once at the ticket office what the full circuit costs before you commit. For the part people underestimate, see our [[heavenly-lake-tianchi-hiking-trails-and-cable-car-guide|Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) Hiking Trails and…]].
A second look on day two
I did, and the second visit was better, because the first had been spent working out where to stand. The second time you can skip the obligatory viewpoint and walk along the base of the ridge where the light comes in sideways, and that is the photograph you keep. If your itinerary has a spare morning, spend it here again rather than at the bigger name on the far side of town. Almost nobody does Heavenly Lake Tianchi The twice. That stretch of the trip is described in our [[karakul-lake-muztagh-ata-the-blue-mirror-beneath-the-father-of-ice-mountains|Karakul Lake & Muztagh Ata: The Blue Mirror…]] too.
