Panlong Ancient Road: The 600-Curve Mountain Road That Became a Xinjiang Legend
Some roads are built to go somewhere; the Panlong Ancient Road (盘龙古道, ‘Coiling Dragon Road’) was built to prove a point. Carved into a single mountain in the Pamir, it gains over a kilometer of altitude in about 30 km using more than 600 switchbacks — a number so absurd it reads like a joke until you drive it. The local tagline says you will experience ‘all the bends of life’ (li jingshi zhi wan) on one mountain, and drivers come from across China to tick it off.
It is not a through-route to anywhere important; it connects two plateau villages and is itself the destination. That is the appeal.
The Experience
From the top, the road unravels below you in a hypnotic coil — hairpins stacked so tightly that from a drone’s eye they look like a dragon’s spine, which is the name. Driving it is a slow, deliberate exercise: first gear, constant steering, and a view that keeps folding back on itself. At the summit there is a viewpoint and the now-famous sign; at the base, the villages of the 塔什库尔干 (Tashkurgan) county spread out flat.
It is thrilling but not technical in the off-road sense — the surface is paved and the turns are engineered, not improvised. The challenge is stamina and concentration, not clearance.
Getting There
Panlong sits in Tashkurgan county, reached from Kashgar via the Karakoram Highway (and thus requires the border permit covered in our travel guides). It is typically driven as a day loop from Tashkurgan town: north on the KKH, then the Panlong spur, then back. Allow a half day including photo stops, because you will stop a lot.
Season and Safety
Open season: roughly May–October, like the rest of the Pamir. Snow closes it in winter, and even in season an early snowfall can shut it without notice.
Driving: go in daylight, take the turns slow, and watch for the occasional oncoming car or herder. There are few pull-offs on the steep section; use the designated viewpoints. Altitude at the top is high — move calmly, not urgently.
Vehicle: any normal car handles the paved switchbacks. A higher car helps only on the access tracks. Fuel up in Tashkurgan before the loop.
Don’t rush it. The road is short in distance but long in attention. Build it into a Pamir day that also catches Karakul Lake at good light, and you get the two best drives in the south in one outing.
