Burqin Town Guide: The Colorful Gateway to Kanas (Where to Eat, Stay, Refuel)
Every Kanas trip starts or ends in Burqin, and most travellers treat it as a pit stop. That is a mistake. This small town where the Burqin River meets the Irtysh has a colourful Russian-influenced core and the best night market in northern Xinjiang. I now build in a night on both ends of an Altai trip, because the town is a genuine pleasure rather than just a transit point.
Why Burqin Matters
It is the last real town before the Kanas mountains: fuel, supermarkets, banks, and a range of hotels you will not find inside the geopark. Staging here means you can enter Kanas at opening the next morning instead of rushing from Urumqi. The difference between entering at 09:00 and at 11:00 is the difference between a misty lake and a crowded one.

The Night Market (The Real Reason to Stop)
Burqin’s riverside night market is famous for grilled fish from the Irtysh (try the cold-water qiezi fish), plus samsa, naan, and melon. It runs from dusk and is the most fun meal of the Altai trip. Prices are fair but tourist-level; go hungry and share plates, because the portions are generous and the variety is the point.
Staging Your Kanas Trip
Arrive Burqin afternoon, eat at the market, sleep, and take the 07:00–08:00 shuttle or private 4×4 toward Jiadengyu and Kanas. In reverse, end your Altai loop here to decompress and do laundry before the long haul to Urumqi. The Kanas guide assumes Burqin as the launch point, and most itineraries are built around that first night.
Practical notes
Fill your fuel tank here; the mountain stations are sparse and pricey. Withdraw cash; some mountain yurts and shuttles are cash-only, and the nearest ATM to the park may be in Burqin itself. The town is walkable, but a taxi across it costs a few yuan and saves your legs for the trails.
